History:

  • Ethnic group in West Africa containing tens of millions of people

  • Most live in Southeastern Nigeria

  • Speak the Igbo language

 

 

Religion:

  • Polytheistic

  • Main god: Chukwu or "almighty god

  • Teaches that each person is born with a spiritual assistant/guide unique to each individual called a Chi

    • The person’s fate and destiny will be determined by their Chi

  • Also have “lower-dieties”

 

 

The Igbo and Their Interactions:

  • Word “Igbo” is used in 3 senses, describes Igbo territory, identifies Igbo people, identifies the language spoken by the Igbo people

  • Arrival of British in the 1870s deepened Igbo roots, cause them to interact with other Nigerians.

  • Enthusiastic to embrace Christianity and Western education

  • Igbo people took a hit after Nigerian Civil War

  • Many people emigrated out of Igbo homeland

  • Not many jobs, poor infrastructure, no federal presence, etc.

 

 

Culture and Language:

  • Melodic music style, percussion instruments

  • Udu= clay jug

  • Ekwe= hollowed log

  • Opi= similar to a flute

  • Includes a lot of drums

  • Language= Igbo people largely speak Igbo language

  • Written in Roman script
